Wiscasset selectmen hear about community center roof
An engineering firm is recommending part of the Wiscasset Community Center's roof be replaced within a year and the rest in five to 10 years, at a projected cost of $240,000 to $280,000.
The roof dates to the 1990s and has had more than 200 repairs. It stopped leaking earlier this year, but parts of it have fractures and drainage issues, according to the report by Wright-Pierce Engineering.
Town Manager Marian Anderson is set to bring up the memo to selectmen on Nov. 18. Tuesday's board meeting at the municipal building starts at 7 p.m.
The town hired the firm to inspect the roof. Two Wright-Pierce representatives did the inspection Oct. 7.
According to the firm's Oct. 21 memo to Anderson and Parks and Recreation Director Todd Souza, the town could put a new roof over the existing one, for $150,000, instead of replacing it.
But the firm does not recommend going that route, due to the roof's condition and its history of leaks.
“This approach will likely solve the leaking at a lower cost; however it is unknown ... if corrosion of the metal deck has occurred or if the roof insulation is saturated from prior roof leaks,” the memo states. “Overlaying the existing roof system would not allow the deck to be inspected or repaired if needed.”
Also Tuesday night, plans call for the board to consider an $8,000 deal with Central Maine Pyrotechnics for the July 4, 2015 fireworks show. The spending would also take voter approval next year.
