Congresswoman Chellie Pingree congratulated Maine teacher Nancie Atwell, who won the first Global Teacher Prize on March 15, in Dubai.
Atwell was one of 5,000 teachers worldwide nominated for the award, and has said she will donate the entire $1 million prize to the school she founded in Edgecomb 25 years ago.
"Anyone who ever spent a day at the Center for Teaching and Learning has seen how dedicated Nancie Atwell is to her students, to other educations and to the teaching profession," Pingree said. "Now the whole world knows. And the fact that she is putting all of the prize money back into the school is one more example of her devotion to education. Maine is lucky to have Nancie Atwell. She is an inspiration to us all."
