Westport Island Column: Mother's Day breakfast and flood insurance
Best friend, unsung hero, always there, maybe a funny gal who often surprises you — our moms come in many different styles.
The Mother’s Day Breakfast Buffet this Sunday is a lovely way to give a big hometown thanks to your mother. Come one, come all, Westport families and everyone from greater/suburban Westport (aka Wiscasset, Edgecomb, Alna, Woolwich and beyond), to the town hall from 8 to 11 a.m. The first 15 moms will receive a complimentary breakfast thanks to a generous son and Westport neighbor.
Let’s fill the hall this Sunday with family and friends, neighbors and visitors. Nita Greenleaf will spoil us with delicious eggs anyway, bacon, sausage, ham (until it lasts), pancakes, corned beef hash, sausage gravy over biscuits, home fries, toast, muffins, coffee, milk, and juice. The cost is $10 adult (free for the first 15 mothers) and $5 for children under 8.
Switching topics a bit: have you read about the new flood maps? Concerned about how your flood insurance might be impacted? For Lincoln County towns, there is a meeting next Monday, May 11 at the Waldoboro Town Office (1600 Atlantic Highway, Route 1) from 2 to 4 p.m., and from 6 to 8 p.m.
Representatives from FEMA, the state and their mapping partners will be available to answer flood risk and insurance questions, and will help property owners identify and understand how their risk may be changing. The maps are available to review at the town office. Residents are encouraged to bring their elevation certificates and/or flood insurance policies in order to get the best information about how their flood insurance rates may change as a result of the new mapping and legislative insurance reforms.
The annual island clean-up day is coming up next weekend, Saturday, May 16. The Conservation Commission is looking for eager volunteers to help spruce up our road-sides and pick up a winter’s worth of litter. Please consider pitching-in and joining friends and neighbors at the town hall at 9 am, enjoy a cup of coffee and snack, and choose a road (or part of one) to tackle. Trash bags will be available, along with a few orange vests and spearing sticks. If it rains, Sunday is the back-up date.
A perfect way to continue the “clean-up” momentum is the town-long yard sale on Saturday, June 13. Lots of folks have already signed up to participate, and with many off-island shoppers, we’re dreaming of a cleaner garage, basement and kitchen shelves! Sign up with Susan Partelow at the town office, 207-882-8477.
We’re getting psyched for Aug. 16 — and one major part of the WCA Anniversary Celebration is the arts and crafts exhibit. The deadline for submitting info about your handmade work (whether a painting, crocheting, pen and ink, weaving, fiber art, knitting, bookmaking, pottery, carving, etc.) is a little over a month away, June 16. It will be great to feature all Westport artists and artisans with at least one piece. Please send one or two photos with approximate measurements to Susan Bowditch, 32 Castle Lane, Westport Island or susanbowditch@hotmail.com.
Local crafters and artists will have an opportunity to sell their unique, functional and beautiful work as part of the WCA’s annual Meet and Greet, set for Saturday, June 20. The Community Association is offering tables to crafters and artists at a very low cost of $10. If you’d like to have a table at this popular hors d’oeuvres & wine tasting event, please email Sandra Crehore at screhore@roadrunner.com.
Nice trade: the very delightful sound of peepers makes me almost forget the fairly constant (and welcome) snow-plowing runs of not that long ago. News and notes always welcome at mewbarnes2@yahoo.com.
