Rotary collects electronic waste
Owners of out-of-use computers, tape decks and televisions found a quick and cheap way of disposing of their unused electronics at the Damariscotta-Newcastle Rotary Club’s third annual e-Waste collection, Saturday, May 14.
"If it has a board or a cord, we'll take it," said Rotary spokesperson Lorraine Faherty.
Faherty said that the event not only helps homeowners but benefits the various charities the Rotary Club supports. Donations requested at the drop-off assist area sports boosters and food banks, she said.
Helping out were Lincoln Academy students who are members of a junior Rotary group called Interact.
Inmates at Two Bridges Regional Jail in Wiscasset were on work release helping shrink-wrap stacks of electronic gear.
Lincoln County Sheriff’s Officer Ellie Grover said the project was one of several inmates do for reduced sentences.
“For every two days of work they are released a day early,” said Grover.
Faherty said an e-Waste company repackages and picks up the collected items free of charge. The company then recycles the electronics for the metal content.
The event was held at the Floor Magic parking lot on Biscay Road in Damariscotta.
