King began the tour at 10 a.m. at the Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens. He learned about the facility’s planned expansion. The tour continued with a stop at Oyster Upwellers in Damariscotta at noon. The tour continued by boat to Waldoboro at the Pemaquid Oyster Company harvesting and nursery operation at 12:30 p.m. The Mook Sea Farm Floating Grow-out Operation and Hatchery Wharf was next at 12:45 p.m., the Muscongus Bay Aquaculture Processing Plant visit followed at 1:30 p.m. The tour concluded at 3 p.m. following a stop at the Maine Fresh Sea Farm and Pemaquid Mussel Farm in Walpole.
The tour focused on aquaculture as a diverse and growing force in Maine’s economy. King’s Regional Representative Christopher Rector explained the tour’s purpose was to update the senator about recent changes in the aquaculture industry.
“This gives us a good overview of the promise and prospects of aquaculture in midcoast Maine. It really gives us a complete and clear understanding of the changes,” Rector said.
