Sarmanian mediates problems between Edgecomb fire chief and Wiscasset ambulance director
Select Board Chairman Jack Sarmanian is mediating a problem between the Edgecomb fire chief and Wiscasset Ambulance Service director. The selectmen appointed Sarmanian to serve as a mediator during the Dec. 19 board meeting. The selectmen didn’t provide any details about why Wiscasset Ambulance Director Director Toby Martin requested the meeting except to say “A meeting has been set up tomorrow with myself, Mr. Martin and Roy (Edgecomb Fire Chief Roy Potter),” Sarmanian said.
One other person was also scheduled to attend the meeting. Potter requested one of his department’s officers attend. The board approved his request to allow Lt. Bob McFetridge to participate in the session. Sarmanian questioned why Potter wanted a third party involved in the discussion.
“So you know I’m not the only one complaining about the situation,” Potter said.
The meeting was planned for 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 20. Sarmanian said an executive session is “likely” to be held.
In other action, the selectmen took a step forward in holding a special town meeting to consider imposing a moratorium on house boats and other similar vessels in town. The planning board and Harbor Master Corning Townsend requested the selectmen begin the process of placing a six-month moratorium allowing the town to craft a suitable ordinance. The planning board requested selectmen’s approval for the Ordinance Review Committee to begin creating a proposed ordinance.
“This is something not well-defined in our ordinances and we need to address it before it becomes a problem,” said Planning Board member David Nutt. “The only kind of place for this to happen is from a special town meeting. The moratorium will give us time to create an ordinance in a preemptive manner to best serve the town’s needs.”
The planning board believes an ordinance would provide guidance in handling fire, police, ambulance and other emergency situations. The selectmen also appointed Potter to serve as the ORC’s consultant in drafting the ordinance. The selectmen will consider holding a special town meeting during their next meeting in two weeks. The Jan. 17 is the earliest a special town meeting could be held, according to selectmen.
The selectmen also filled a vacancy on the budget committee. The selectmen unanimously selected Janet Blevins, who also serves on the Website Committee, to fill one of two vacancies. She joins returning members Anita Sprague, Jack Brennan and Karen Potter. The five-person board still needs another person because Chairman Nort Fowler’s and Chet Clark’s terms expired. A fifth person is expected to be named before the committee begins meeting in January, according to Sarmanian.
The board also said good-bye to retiring recording secretary Sherry Tibbetts. She has worked for the board during the past 2.5 years. Tibbetts is retiring and giving up similar positions in Boothbay and Southport. The Dec. 19 meeting was Tibbetts’ last for Edgecomb. The board said hello to new recording secretary Jessica Hicks. She is an Edgecomb resident who works for Bath Iron Works. She served in the U.S. Air Force and has experience in computers. She will record the selectmen’s minutes and serve as the board’s website administrator.
The board will meet next at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 3 in the municipal building.
