Newcastle’s Second Congregational Church announces Eastertide events
The Second Congregational Church, UCC in Newcastle Eastertide has announced its Eastertide calendar of activities, open to all.
Palm Sunday, April 9, Worship Service and Childcare/Sunday school 10 a.m.: Special music will include: “Lift Up Your Heads, O Ye Gates” from the Messiah, and “Ride On, King Jesus.” The service will turn to the story of Jesus’ Passion as we walk with Jesus to the cross.
Maundy Thursday, April 13 at 7 p.m.: We will share Communion, remembering Jesus' last supper with the disciples. This is one of the most moving services of the church year as the story of Christ’s passion is shared in scripture readings and music from the 21st century to the Renaissance. Tenebrae comes from the Latin word meaning “shadows.” As the service progresses, candles are gradually extinguished leaving the sanctuary in darkness, and inviting us into a time of waiting for Easter morning.
Good Friday, April 14 from noon to 3 p.m.: The sanctuary will be open for those who wish to come for silent prayer and meditation.
Easter Sunday, April 16 at 10 a.m.: All are welcome to join us as we celebrate the joy of Christ's resurrection. The service will be family oriented, with a special message for the children. There will be wonderful music from the Hand Bell and Chancel Choirs, timpani, and organ. The service will conclude with the traditional singing of the chorus, “Hallelujah,” from Handel’s Messiah, and the amazing “Toccata” from Organ Symphony V by Charles-Marie Widor.
An Easter egg hunt for children will begin at approximately 11:15 a.m. The Easter egg hunt will take place at Memorial Park next to the church. All are welcome!
