Lincoln County Historical Association receives Costume Society of America grant
At the end of the month of May, a group of Angels will descend upon the Old Jail Museum in Wiscasset. The Angels are Costume Society of America members who have volunteered to work with LCHA’s collections committee and staff to document, label and preserve the textile collections of LCHA’s three museums: the Chapman-Hall House in Damariscotta, the Pownalborough Court House in Dresden and the Museum and Old Jail in Wiscasset.
CSA members are individuals who are involved in the study, education, collection, and preservation, presentation, and interpretation of dress and appearance in our past, present, and future societies. The Angels Project was founded in 2006 to support one small museum each year from a location near the Costume Society of America’s National Symposium. The 2017 National Symposium is to be held in Portland, Maine in May.
On May 30, CSA volunteers will spend the day at the Museum and Old Jail in Wiscasset to demonstrate proper care and preservation of textiles and teach LCHA collections committee members these techniques. They will also provide expertise and additional human resources to document, catalogue, photograph, label, and store objects from LCHA’s textile and costume collection. If needed, conservation treatment will also be provided on premises. Supplies and equipment for textile conservation and preservation are donated by the Angels Project and the CSA Endowment Fund.
It is a great honor for LCHA to be chosen for the Angels Project. The training will ensure that the Association’s textile collections will be properly preserved for future exhibits and storage.
Lincoln County Historical Association was founded in 1954 to preserve and interpret buildings, documents, and artifacts that are important to Lincoln County’s heritage. For more information, please visit the LCHA website, www.lincolncountyhistory.org.
