Volunteers carry out window project
Two hundred and fifty seven insulating window inserts were recently constructed in only four days! The Wiscasset Conservation Commission and the Wiscasset SunCATs (Climate Action Team) sponsored the event through the non-profit organization Window Dressers (www.windowdressers.org). The First Congregational Church Wiscasset UCC donated the space. Sarah’s Cafe donated soup and breads and Rising Tide Co-op donated snacks.
Thirty-one customers will be saving a significant amount of money and energy this year and for the next 10 years with a small investment, as well as helping the environment. Pay back is about one year. Some customers qualified for free inserts.
About half the volunteers (many from the Church and the WCC yoga class) did not have orders, but gave their time to help others. The largest order was for a woman in her mid-80s, who was unable to volunteer. She has kept her home at 55F and she will be more comfortable this winter.
Most volunteers enjoyed themselves so much, they want to help again next year. If you are interested in volunteering or would like to order energy-saving insulating window inserts for next year’s build, go to www.windowdressers.org next spring and sign up.
