It’s time once again for the annual Souper Bowl at the Southport Town Hall, Monday, Jan. 15, from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sponsored by the Southport Memorial Library Aides, the luncheon is free and open to the public.

Join your friends and neighbors for this convivial mid-winter gathering on Martin Luther King Jr. Day. Southport’s “souper” cooks will dish up more than 20 varieties of soups and chilies, accompanied by homemade corn bread, biscuits and rolls. Seconds and thirds are encouraged, and soups will be available for a small donation to take home at the end of the luncheon. Bring your own containers or use disposable ones available at the check out counter.

Past diners have often asked for recipes for the soups, breads and desserts served at the Souper Bowl luncheon. The Library Aides listened, and collected many of those recipes into their new cookbook. “Southport Chefs” is a collection of recipes, many of them from offerings at past Souper Bowls, on sale at this year’s luncheon for only $7. Pick one up, or buy two or three as gifts for friends. All proceeds go towards improving the non-fiction section in the children’s room at Southport Memorial Library.
