“Seeing Ourselves,” a course in human behavior

Coming this fall to Coastal Senior College

“Seeing Ourselves: New Research on Why We Do What We Do” will be offered by Coastal Senior College (CSC) this fall, led by Joel Shapiro, retired professor of education and psychology. Registration is now open for this and the eleven other courses on the fall calendar.

The class will discuss current social and cultural environments, and how we shape, and are shaped by, the many forces and environments that surround us. The class will meet on Zoom, from 1:30 to 3:00 on Thursdays, from Sept. 17 through Oct. 29.

Joel Shapiro retired as chair and full professor of education and psychology from Green Mountain College in Poultney, VT. He won a Fulbright Scholarship to teach at the University of Presov, Slovak Republic, and wrote a book for professors on how to integrate international students in American classrooms. Shapiro has written for American and European journals and lectured at universities and conferences. He holds a bachelor’s degree from Colgate University, a master’s from Temple University, and his doctorate from Nova Southeastern University.

CSC, which serves Lincoln and Knox Counties, currently offers classes in literature, history, writing, math, science, and human behavior. Eight classes meet in person, four on Zoom.

The organization is among a statewide network of 17 volunteer-run Senior Colleges that offer daytime classes and other educational activities primarily for people 50 and over. They provide an opportunity to learn in a congenial, informal atmosphere and to meet fellow learners. Members of one College may take courses in any of the others.
