His early childhood was spent in Reading, Mass. and the family then moved to Arlington, Va. where his father spent his working life with the U.S. Government printing office.

He joined the U.S. Navy toward the end of World War II as a naval air cadet but was lucky enough to miss action in the South Pacific as the war ended prior to his deployment. After receiving his honorable discharge in 1946, he met his first wife, Gloria Yaberg, and they dated until he began college on the east coast.

He attended Duke University, Wilson Teachers College, and then graduated from the University of Southern California with a bachelor of science degree in zoology. Gloria and Art reconnected when he came back to California to attend USC and they were married in August 1949. Art then worked as a chemist at Goodyear Tire and Rubber Co. He then met and married his loving second wife, Barbara (Bobbie), with whom he moved to the Boothbay region upon his retirement in 1988, where they lived in bliss until she died due to cancer in late January 2006.

Art was an avid sportsman, enjoying bird and deer hunting, salt and fresh water fishing, fly fishing and also enjoyed tying fishing flies. He also was a sailor who participated several times in the San Pedro to Ensenada sailing race and also crewed several times on the Friendship Sloop, Dirigo, during the 1960s when the Friendship Sloop regatta was still held in Friendship. When he retired and moved to Trevett, he began power boating and purchased and restored a 1940's Chris Craft runabout and also purchased and restored a Chebeague Island Lobster boat and was a member of the Wawenok Sail and Power Squadron. He loved classic Corvettes and was a member of the Corvettes of Coastal Maine from 1990-2001. He also enjoyed photography, working with wood and building wooden boat models from scratch.
