Bras support awareness
Anyone walking into the Wiscasset meeting room in the next few days will see something that will turn their heads. In support of October being National Breast Cancer Awareness month, many bras of various colors, sizes and designs will be hanging from the walls.
The month of October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and many events, including the bra project are being planned in support of that program.
Debbie Jones from the Breast Cancer Awareness program requested the selectmen give her permission to hang bras throughout the town.
In fact, bras may even be hung on the Davey’s Bridge during the month of October. However, according to Town Manager Laurie Smith, the state doesn’t usually give permission to have anything hanging on the bridge because it could create distractions. Anyone seeing bras flying in the wind from the bridge could conceivably be distracted.
The selectmen did not agree with having bras hanging in the town area out of doors, because they said they would be concerned of distraction to drivers as well as the bras being stolen or destroyed.
Jones was asked if she had considered perhaps putting up pink lights or pink rooms. She said she had, because she wanted something wild that would get attention.
Selectman Jefferson Slack suggested a compromise of having the bras hung in the meeting room for people to see throughout the month in support of National Breast Cancer Awareness. The selectmen voted 3-2 in favor. Selectmen Ed Polewarczyk and Judy Colby opposed the motion.
Although Jones appeared to be thinking outside the box, bras are being used to bring awareness to breast cancer throughout the country. In Lawrence, Kansas, 500 bras are blowing in the wind across Kaw River, and they will be displayed there for two weeks. In Louisville, Ky., hundreds of bras are hanging in a parking lot.
The bras that will be hanging at the Wiscasset town hall will be made by a 96-year-old woman who is a breast cancer survivor, according to Jones.
