On Jan. 21, Philanthropic Educational Organization will celebrate the 150th anniversary of its founding. Nearly 6,000 chapters across the United States and Canada are celebrating the historic milestone.

Since its inception in 1869, the non-profit organization has helped more than 105,000 women pursue educational goals by providing more than $321 million in grants, scholarships, awards and loans, as well as supporting Cottey College. The P.E.O. sisterhood currently numbers nearly a half million women in the United States and Canada who are passionate about helping women advance through education, while also supporting and encouraging them to reach for their dreams. In addition to the educational philanthropies, the P.E.O. Sisterhood provides a framework of support and community for all members.

What started with a bond of friendship among seven women in Mount Pleasant, Iowa is now one of the oldest women’s organizations in North America.

“The P.E.O. Members in Brunswick stand on the shoulders of the generations of P.E.O. Sisters who came before us,” says Ginger Rickeman president of Chapter G. “They were dedicated to the mission of women supporting women, just as we are today. It is a cause that will continue to be relevant for the next 150 years.”

Chapter G has been a part of the Brunswick community since it was organized in 1987. Over the years, it has assisted local women from area towns with loans, scholarships and continuing education grants. Among its yearly events are an annual Games Day with all proceeds going directly to support women’s education. This year’s Games Day will take place on June 28 in Boothbay Harbor at St. Andrews Village.
