Come to Westport Island meet and greet
So good to see so many bright yellow flowers in the yard tilting toward the sun … hey, wait a minute! Darn those dandelions.
Folks have been quiet this week. There must be lots of tilling, moving rocks and adding compost to our gardens; school activities including budget meetings and college graduations; getting boats out and spruced up, and the first mowing of the season (busily flailing at early mosquitoes, no doubt).
A reminder about the public hearing at the Town Hall on the submitted petition proposing the sale of the Wright House: this Thursday, May 16 at 7 p.m. Come, listen, express your opinion. We’ll be voting on this at the end of June.
Did you see the notice in the paper last week about another local scholarship fund? The Bessie D. Brooks Trust, set up by Mrs. Brooks, who used to live in the Westport/Bath area, will offer scholarships to help with undergraduate education.
If you’re a high school grad (or soon-to-be) whether from a public or private school, or home-schooled in Lincoln or Sagadahoc counties, call Laura Comer, First Advisors, 207-563-1900, ext. 5066 for an application. They’re due July 15.
After your Saturday errands and house projects, it will be time to say hi to neighbors and enjoy delicious wines and cheeses at the Westport Island Community Association’s (WCA) Meet and Greet on Saturday, from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Town Hall.
Everyone gets a kick out of this fun spring event, and the WCA works very hard to make it a successful fundraiser for their student stipend fund. Come by and purchase raffle tickets for some very cool prizes. This is also a chance to donate non-perishable food and household items to the Cottage Pantry (much appreciated).
The WCA presents a whole year of community activities. You can pick up the 2013 Calendar of Activities, academic stipends information, annual report and membership information at the Meet and Greet or anytime at the Town Office.
This is such a beautiful time of year: new colors every day as the trees leaf out, spring plants catch our eye, and alewifes and birds are on the move. Lots of good nature walks and talks scheduled by the Hidden Valley Nature Preserve in Jefferson (www.hvnc.org or call 207-200-8840), the Sheepscot Valley Conservation Association (www.sheepscot.org, 207-586-5616), or the Coastal Maine Botanical Garden.
Or maybe you’d like to know more about local lobstering? A very interesting Coastal Senior College class is set to begin at St. Andrews Village in Boothbay Harbor on Thursday, May 23.
Bob Brown, who some of you may know from Boothbay, is the speaker for this CSC class to be held from 3 to 5 pm for four weeks. To learn more and register, call the University of Maine at Rockland (otherwise known as URock) 1-800-286-1594. I bet this will fill up quickly.
Mr. Brown grew up in the family lobstering business, and has served on many industry associations. He’ll share his experiences and knowledge about lobstering’s history from the 18th century to the present.
Please keep us up on your family’s accomplishments, including graduations, new jobs, and other adventures, at mewbarnes2@yahoo.com or 207-882-6055. Thanks!
