CTL: A professional development destination

The Center for Teaching and Learning, a K-8 demonstration school in Edgecomb, welcomed another group of teacher-interns last week from New York and Massachusetts. For almost twenty-five years, teachers from across the country have visited Edgecomb for a week at a time to observe methods developed by CTL’s faculty and adapt them to their own classrooms and schools. The week’s interns included five teachers from the Amherst regional public school district, bringing the total of teachers from this district whom CTL has hosted this fall to seven. Amherst’s public school administrators have demonstrated great interest in CTL’s systems.
Although not a charter school, CTL accomplishes what charter schools were conceived to do—innovate, and then pass along successful methods to teachers in public school classrooms. Faculty members experiment thoughtfully, write books and give presentations, are featured in educational DVD’s about CTL’s programs, and demonstrate their methods in-person to the visiting teachers.
More than 600 teachers from 40 states, Washington, D.C., India, England, Canada, and South America have participated so far in the CTL intern program. Only classroom teachers may apply to become interns; the fee they pay helps underwrite tuition assistance for CTL students.
To visit when school is in session, prospective parents should call Scott MacDonald, Head of School, at 207-882-9706 to schedule a day to attend a whole-school morning meeting and take a tour of the facilities.
