Democrats discuss money in politics
If you're dismayed at the ever-increasing role of money in U.S. politics, you'll want to attend the upcoming Lincoln County Democrats monthly meeting Wednesday May 22, when B.J. McCollister, program director for Maine Citizens for Clean Elections, will be the featured speaker.
The meeting is open to all. It will take place in Wiscasset at the 911 Communications Center behind the Lincoln County Court House. A 30-minute social gathering begins at 6:30 p.m.; the meeting gets under way at 7 p.m. Refreshments will be available.
McCollister is billing his talk: “Money in Politics: Democracy's Crisis in Confidence.” This will be one stop on a 50-town Money in Politics speaking tour being conducted by MCCE.
“As the Supreme Court continues to dismantle a century of campaign finance laws, Americans are coming together to take back our democracy,” McCollister said.
Among other topics, he will be discussing pending Maine legislation, private political spending, and the Supreme Court's 2010 Citizens United decision removing limits on corporate political spending.
