Fatal plane crash in Bristol

Plane crash scene in Bristol Aug. 20. Courtesy of LCSOAt 1 p.m. today, the Lincoln County 911 center received calls of a small plane crash near Fort William Henry in Bristol. Units from Bristol Fire and Rescue, Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office and Central Lincoln County Ambulance were dispatched to the scene.
A small single engine airplane was found lying upside down in the harbor in about four feet of water. Nearby residents and a building crew witnessed the crash and rushed into the water to help.
The male pilot was pulled from the plane but died at the scene. A second male passenger had been able to escape and was transported to Miles Hospital in Damariscotta with non-life-threatening injuries. Identities for these men are not being released at this time.
Initial information indicated the aircraft had left Brunswick Airport with a destination of Knox County Airport and possibly experienced some type of mechanical failure. The actual cause of the crash will be determined by investigators from the FAA and NTSB.
The aircraft was removed from the water by a local marine barge and moved to a secure location pending an investigation by the FAA and NTSB.
Maine Marine Patrol assisted at the scene of the crash.
