Frank Moulton seals the deal on Group 2 opening day at Wiscasset Speedway
What’s better than one opening day at the race track? Two! Fortunately, Wiscasset Speedway has the opportunity to host dual Opening Days each and every season due to their bi-weekly race program. This past Saturday, the Portland Glass Strictly Streets, Dale’s Cash Fuel Roadrunners, Creative Cleanouts Modifieds and the Wood Pellet Warehouse Late Models hit the track for their 2026 season opener.
The Strictly Streets took to the track first for their qualifying heat races, with Ray Dinsmore and Scott Eck leading the charge. Eck edged out Dinsmore for the early lead in the 35-lap feature while Tyler Jordan and Chris Burgess (making his first Street Stock start in nearly 20 years) filed in behind him. A mid-race caution on lap 15 brought the field back together and Scott Eck maintained command on the restart.
Melee ensued in the closing laps of the race as Dan Morton and Tyler Dinsmore made hard contact on lap 17, resulting in a red flag. After a solid performance all day, Tyler Jordan lost a tire on the restart, leading to a pile-up with just 6 laps to go that collected Chris Burgess, Landon Tapley, Dale Lawrence, Mike Delano and others.
Teammates Scott Eck and Mac Hannan, Jr. squared up on the restart, with Hannan making a bold crossover move with 4 to go, taking over the top spot. He sailed into the victory but failed post-race inspection due to ride height, handing the victory over to Chaz Briggs - his first official win at Wiscasset Speedway. Zack Emerson and Scott Eck rounded out the official top 3.
Father-son duo Seth and Doug Woodard picked up a pair of qualifying heat wins in the Roadrunners and Seth Woodard pulled out to a sizable early lead in the 25-lap feature. Hayden Carver had a tire go down on lap 8 and pulled to the infield as the race remained green. Eric Powell made hard contact with the turn 3 wall on lap 11, resulting in a red flag.
Seth Woodard led the charge on the restart as Gavin Gerow powered to second. Woodard got bent out of shape with 8 to go, allowing Gerow to pull right up to his back bumper. While the two drivers battled it out, Paul Hopkins and Jason Meservey collided on lap 19, leading to a caution with just 6 laps to go. Seth Woodard got a big jump on the restart as Gavin Gerow fell back to third behind Doug Woodard, which is where they would finish.
Multi-time champion Adam Chadbourne won the sole heat race for the Modifieds but made hard contact with Kyle Hewins on the initial lap of the 30-lap feature, an impact that resulted in both drivers heading to the pits. Alec Brown powered to the lead on the restart as both Chadbourne and Hewins returned to the track. Chadbourne quickly made his way back inside the top 3, diving to the inside of Jaxson Moreside on lap 6 to take over second. Alec Brown continued to extend his lead in the laps that followed, creating a 2+ second gap between himself and Chadbourne. Brown, a division rookie, held off the veteran for his first career Modified victory while Jaxson Moreside, in his first career Modified start, completed the podium.
Frank Moulton and Tiger Colby started on the front row of the 40-lap Late Model feature after winning their respective heat races. Moulton hopped out to the early lead while Tiger Colby and Jonathon Emerson battled it out for second behind him. Colby was able to distance himself on lap 10 as Emerson got bent out of shape. The two drivers remained within arms-length of each other and made slight contact on lap 28 while battling for position, allowing Emerson to get the upper hand. Frank Moulton continued to set a blazing pace in the closing half of the race, expanding his lead to half a track. While Frank Moulton sailed into a commanding victory, Jonathon Emerson and Tiger Colby rounded out the top 3.
Saturday’s Group 2 season opener was a blazing success with over 60 drivers in the pits and a great fan turnout.
Team Wiscasset will keep the fun coming with another Group 1 program on Saturday, May 2nd that will feature all Group 1 divisions in addition to this year’s newest flex division, the Carver’s Driving Academy Crown Vics.
The green flag flies at 2 p.m. and as always, adult grandstand admission is just $5 while kids 6 and under get in for free.
