Keeping the senior center going
Last Wednesday’s Public Supper at the Senior Center was one of those relaxing, enjoyable and inspiring events. First, there were some new guests and some returning members. Then there was the supper itself. Ken made three different veggie lasagnas. One seemed to be the favorite of many diners. It contained fiddleheads, caramelized onions, mushrooms and zucchini. That was really good.
During the announcement period, Ellie noted the four running for a position on the Board of Trustees and asked those present to say a few words. Cyndy Lewis and Gail Burke are running for a shared trustee spot. They both said that they wanted to see the Senior Center succeed.
Arlene Polewarczyk said that her mother once told her, if you join an organization, don’t just sit there. She also said that she wants to help keep the Senior Center going. Rudi Rines said that he will always say what he thinks the members want. He also stated that his social life was here at the Senior Center. Tony Gatti, the other person running for the Board of Trustees was not present. Ellie concluded the announcements by saying that we will need to make changes and urged everyone to read her column in the Newsletter concerning changes.
After the supper was over, a Coffee Break Meeting was held. About 24 people stayed to join in a general discussion about the future of the Senior Center. There were many ideas and comments and just about everyone had something to contribute. I was impressed with the enthusiasm and positive attitude. To see so many voicing opinions and interest in keep the Senior Center going and being a vital resource in the community was inspiring.
I asked everyone why do you come to the meals? What would you like to see before, during or after the meals? The bottom line was that people come to “socialize.” There were several who said they did not want to cook. For many, especially those living alone, it was an opportunity to get out with others and enjoy a dinner and conversation. Several who were still working or were engaged in many volunteer projects wanted to see something after the meal. Some suggestions included Bingo like we use to have or other board games. One person suggested a baseball type of game they had played in Florida. Several others said they had played that game in Florida and highly recommended it. Other suggestions revolved around entertainment and speakers.
There was also interest in trips like to the Maine State Musical Theater. There are many possibilities and we all need to be involved in suggesting and choosing what we will do.
