Little League, big discussion
For Lincoln Little League, a new field might not be on deck.
Lincoln County Little League President Paul Miner presented a slide show to the Damariscotta Board of Selectmen Wednesday, Nov. 4. In that presentation he floated several possible locations for a new baseball complex to be housed in Damariscotta.
During the presentation and in comments afterward, Miner mentioned that when the CLC YMCA expanded its parking lot, it allegedly removed some of the light fixtures that the league used for night games.
CLC YMCA Board Chairman Dennis Anderson responded and said the YMCA acted accordingly when it expanded the lot, and suggested that the YMCA and Lincoln Little League could potentially come to an agreement to house a new ballpark.
Damariscotta Town Manager Matt Lutkus said the presentation, and especially the allegations of removing light posts, would need further review.
“There needs to be some clarification, more research, and definition of the town's role in the whole process,” Lutkus said. “Taking down the light post, moving in on the field ... I think there's a misunderstanding as to what actually happened there. The town was not involved, but the town should have been asked, as we were the ones who signed over the property.”
The expansion project was allegedly not permitted and the town reportedly became involved after a neighbor's property began flooding.
During the Nov. 4 presentation, Miner allegedly said the town was involved with the process, which Lutkus said was untrue.
“The inference was that we agreed to it, and we did not,” he said.
Selectman Jim Cosgrove said he was a supporter of little league, but worried about the direction a new field could take. Or, more specifically, where the funding for a proposed field could come from.
“Lincoln Little League is a multi-town organization,” he said. “Yet once again the service center of Damariscotta is asked to take on Bristol, South Bristol, Nobleboro, Bremen, Alna, Wiscasset, Boothbay and Boothbay Harbor. Quite frankly, I want to see numbers before anything else.
“I am a baseball fan, I fully support the little league just not with my tax dollars. I'm not sure if there's anything (there) the town needs to be involved with.”
During the presentation earlier in the month it was suggested that the little league could use the property near the CLC YMCA to house a new field, which is something Selectman Joshua Pinkham said he would prefer to see.
“I would like to see the little league and the YMCA work something out first,” he said.
But, regardless of where the project is located, Cosgrove said he was against publicly funding the field.
“This is shaping up to be a very expensive project,” he said. “I don't see this burden falling to taxpayers. What I would like to see is a concrete proposal... We've seen nothing on the table except a long, rambling disjointed presentation. I think we should table this until there is a more solid plan.”
