Lobster dinner coming up
The third Edgecomb Congregational Church Summer Supper of 2012 will be "The Lobster Dinner" on Saturday, August 18, in the Fellowship Hall. These suppers are a way to raise funds for the church's many out-reach projects, both local and international. For details, go to www.edgecombchurch.org. The supper will start at 5 to 6:30 pm., or until the food runs out. "Good Food, Good Fellowship, for a Good Cause." For anyone who wishes to help out with preparation or clean-up, call Gail Boudin, 882-7972, or the Church office, 882-4060.
Note that the August 18 supper is deemed by some "the best lobster dinner in Maine, if not New England!" The traditional menu also always features home-made baked beans, casseroles, salads and desserts, including a dietetic dessert. The thrift shop is open at 4 p.m. before every supper. There is seating under the tent for those who prefer outside dining.
Indeed, the ECC Thrift Shop is open Tuesdays and Thursdays, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., with a free luncheon on Tuesdays at noon.
Once again, our literary gold medalist! Morganne Elkins, recipient of literary awards from the National Council of Teachers of English and the Scholastic Art and Writing Contest, has been recognized by the Maine Legislature for the excellence of her writing. State Senator Chris Johnson visited the Center for Teaching and Learning, where Morganne is an eighth grader, to present her with a certificate of recognition from the state legislature.
I am very sorry to have omitted the Five Mile Yard Sale on Cross Point Road, with its ECC Thrift Shop involvement, but seriously, friends, if you don't tell me about happenings, how do I know they are going to happen? My contact information is always at the end of the column. I'd love to hear directly more about Edgecomb doings! Modesty prevents me from pointing out that many people read this column, which makes it a good place to publicize events.
If anyone wants to contribute to a worthy cause, none worthier than to assist the Edgecomb Fire Department to repair or replace the impeller part of Engine No. 3's pump, recently damaged by gravel. Fire Chief Roy Potter fears the cost of repair or replacement may be as high as $13,000. Call the EFD, Chief Potter (882-9957 or rdpotter68@gmail.com) or Assistant Chief Larry Omland (882-6280 or lgomland@gmail.com) to see how we all can assist.
News from the western front, August 16, 1812: General William Hull's forces have been defeated by combined forces of British out of Canada and the Shawnee confederation, led by Tecumseh and his brother, the mystic leader Tenskwatawa. Fort Detroit has been surrendered to the British, 2,200 U.S. troops captured or killed, and General Hull recalled in disgrace. In subsequent news, William Hull has been court-martialed and sentenced to death by firing squad for neglect of duty, cowardice and treason. Late breaking news: President James Madison has dropped the charge of treason and reprieved General Hull from the death penalty, out of respect for his earlier heroism during the War of Independence in the 1770s. Bruce asks why this is of any relevance to Edgecomb? Well... Think Fort Edgecomb, now 203 years old. Think of the troops mustered there, who were later sent to the western front, which during the War of 1812 was along the St. Laurence River in Vermont, and Lake Champlain in northern New York state. There were Lincoln County soldiers present at those conflicts.
Just now we are enjoying a household of nuclear family! Daphne and Kevin Klemme with children Ben and Kate from Connecticut, and Bisi and Johnny Yee from North Carolina! But, will someone explain to me why the bus from Portland airport drops passengers off at the southern fringe of Wiscasset, instead of maybe at the Post Office, or near the Courthouse/Town Office area? B and J had to walk a good three miles, dragging heavy suitcases (good thing they had wheels!) to finally subside at Sarah's for sandwiches and cold beer.
