Looking for senior center trustees candidates
Last Wednesday, Ellie Tracy, Chairman of the Trustees, announced that the nominating committee is looking for candidates to fill three open positions on the board. Elections will be held in June and the new board will take office starting on July 1, the new fiscal year.
The open positions were discussed at the last trustee meeting. Some members who the trustees thought might be interested in serving will be approached personally. A sign-up list will also be posted. There was a general concern that few, if any, members would be interested in taking on this job. However, I would just like to list a few qualities that are needed just in case someone reading this column is considering becoming a Trustee.
A trustee first needs to feel that people over the age of 50 are dynamic, energetic, fun-loving and willing to learn new things and share life experiences. A trustee needs to like people and enjoy working with others. The ideal trustee candidate should have a background that involves organizing and directing people to accomplish simple as well as difficult tasks. Is this you? Now is the time to make use of your talents.
You do not have to be a member presently, but you will have to join in order to be a trustee. Have you ever said, “I would join the Senior Center if they did (blank) or supported (blank)”? If you have, then now is the time to sign up to be a trustee and get your project going.
Ellie also announced that the potluck dinner, scheduled for the last Wednesday of May, will not be the same as the last one. It may not even be a potluck. More details will be announced as we get closer to that day.
The Wiscasset Senior Center Scholarship Fund, Inc. will present the 2013, $1,000 scholarship award on Wednesday, May 15 at the Senior Center public supper. Arlene Polewarzqy, member of the Scholarship selection committee will be the host. Please be sure to make a reservation if you plan to attend this presentation.
The recipient will be the 10th Wiscasset High School graduate to receive a scholarship check since the program began in 2004. These scholarships are funded by Wiscasset Senior Center members, neighbors and friends.
Last Tuesday many members of the Bath Senior Center came to our Cribbage Tournament. We had a total of over 40 players that day and I’m sure all had a good time. They did take first place and shared high hand leaving the rest of the prizes to us.
Over the years we have played together, the awards have been pretty evenly distributed. The idea has always been to have a good time playing an intriguing card game. However, one Bath player did tell me at the start, that the only reason he was there was to win. He did say that with a twinkle in his eye.
The cribbage tournament winners on Tuesday, April 30 were Lois Fournier first, June Caton second, Dick Barnard third, Dwight Lewis low score and Sally Sherman and Joe Tomey tied for the high hand. The cribbage tournament winners on Thursday, May 2 were Debbie Mullen first, Phoebe Cromwell second, David Hardman third, Luis Serrano low score and Sally Sherman had the high hand.
