‘Mask over mask or something like that’: Wiscasset eyes Halloween

Details are still to come, but Wiscasset Parks and Recreation Director Duane Goud wants to do the Halloween parade and Nightmare on Federal Street. “I don’t have anything concrete yet, but I know that we’re going to try to do it, on Halloween, and basically have the same type of thing (as each year) on Federal Street. But I think we’re going to have to spread things out enough so that people are social distanced,” he said in a phone interview Oct. 8.

Goud said that will probably include spacing the refreshment tables apart from one another this year, and setting up the music to be heard throughout the street.

“We’re going to try to do the parade, but we’re going to have to do it ...spread out. So after people (check in), I think we’re going to have to move people around so that we have ample space for everybody.” Scarecrowfest Oct. 10-18, another annual Wiscasset favorite that has expanded in recent years, will help Parks and Recreation learn how to do Halloween in the pandemic, Goud said.

Over Zoom Oct. 8, Friends of Wiscasset Village members wondered what the Halloween event might look like this year and how they could help.

After one meeting-goer suggested a car parade instead of Wiscasset’s traditional parade on foot, Bob Bond said children are going to want to be out running around and showing off their costumes. “That’s the thing ... The kids need to be out there in costume, somehow, mask over mask, or something like that. That’s an issue that I’ve been thinking about.”

Halloween will likely come up at a Wiscasset Area Chamber of Commerce meeting, Brad Sevaldson said. WACC has partnered with the town in past editions of Nightmare, he noted.

Drawing laughter when she said she desperately needs another committee, Terry Heller suggested one. Friends co-chair Peter Wells said the group first needs to ask the town if it plans to hold the event. “Because if they aren’t, we’re spinning our wheels. We’re not going to create a parade ourselves.”

A few residents have asked if the department is doing Nightmare this year, Goud said. He told Wiscasset Newspaper he hopes up have “more finalized plans” around the end of the week of Oct. 12 and probably around then will release a flyer like one he said Hallowell did, advising the community on safety this Halloween.
