MDOT to conduct aerial and ground surveys in Wiscasset and Edgecomb
The Maine Department of Transportation plans to conduct an aerial survey, with associated ground activities, along Route 1 and adjoining major intersections in Wiscasset and Edgecomb.
Beginning in November and continuing for several weeks, the survey will help to evaluate strategies to address traffic delays and transportation safety issues identified in last summer’s Road Safety Audit along Route 1. Residents may see survey crews marking Route 1 with paint and working on adjoining land.
The aerial survey is expected to be completed by Thanksgiving, but ground work could continue until snow flies.
The June 2012 Road Safety Audit was conducted to identify ways to reduce traffic delays and to improve safety along Route 1 in
Wiscasset and Edgecomb. It was coordinated by Maine DOT and included local municipal officials, business leaders and first responders, as well as DOT staff. The Road Safety Audit results, and DOT recommendations for further action, were presented at a September 26 workshop held with the Wiscasset and Edgecomb boards of selectmen.
DOT engineers will use the survey information to help determine the feasibility of potential strategies. DOT will continue to work with the Wiscasset and Edgecomb boards of selectmen as the strategies are developed to ensure there is public support for them and also to allow for public input.
Public meetings regarding the status of the analysis will be held this winter. Questions regarding the aerial survey and ground-control can be directed to Gerry Audibert at 624-3315 or gerry.audibert@maine.gov.
