Michael Maxim exits as Edgecomb selectman
May 12 marked the final Edgecomb selectboard meeting with Michael Maxim on the board. Maxim's term ends with the May 16 municipal election, and after three years, the Michael Maxim era is over as an elected leader. Earlier this year, he decided against seeking a second term.
Maxim received a large lilac bush as a parting gift from Administrative Assistant Jessica Mague. "This is in gratitude for your service. You deserve this," she said. A former selectman also addressed Maxim to offer his own gratitude. Mike Smith praised Maxim for his efforts. "You served during a difficult time, and you did a good job. Thank you," Smith said.
Maxim told Smith his work as a town leader was something he was grateful for and others should emulate in the future. Smith served three terms as selectman.
In other action, selectmen took action against a rogue website and Facebook page they claim is masquerading as an official town site. For the past two years, a Facebook and website page have had characteristics of an official municipal source, according to town officials. Selectmen described "Edgecomb.Maine" as a Facebook page posing as an official municipal site.
"A group is trying to make their website or social media look like a town site, and it has to stop," Selectman Forrest Carver said. Following the meeting, selectmen posted a message on the non-municipal Facebook page. "Beware Facebook Imposter The Select Board has requested that the Facebook page, 'Town of Edgecomb” add a disclaimer to their page, stating that it is not the official government Edgecomb, Maine page. As it currently appears, many residents could reasonably believe the page is operated by the town itself. Items posted there are not official town news. 'About' information is incorrect and misleading. It is incorrect to call that page a 'government organization.'"
Selectmen meet next at 6 p.m. Tuesday, May 26 in the conference room.
