Newcastle/Damariscotta rally for ICE accountability, Epstein transparency and voting rights
The regular Saturday rally Feb. 14 on the Newcastle/Damariscotta bridge was dominated this week by three issues: the refusal of Republicans in Congress to rein in ICE, the continuing cover up by Pam Bondi and the Justice Department of the rich and powerful individuals implicated in Epstein’s sex-trafficking crimes, and the re-introduction of the SAVE America bill in Congress.
Rally goers expressed their anger that other than Epstein and Maxwell, not a single perpetrator in the U.S. has been charged with a crime connected with Epstein’s decades-long pedophile and sex-trafficking enterprise. Elsewhere around the world powerful figures are being brought down, but not here. The Justice Department, which is redacting the names of perpetrators and sitting on millions of unpublished documents, continues to insist it has closed the book on Epstein.
Just three months ago 64 percent of Maine voters soundly rejected the list of voter suppression measures in the SAVE America bill but now we see Republicans in Congress attempting to force this through at the national level. If passed, this bill threatens to disenfranchise millions of legitimate voters who do not own a passport (approximately half of all Mainers), or have misplaced their birth certificate (do you know where yours is?), or have changed their name (for example, a married woman who has taken on her husband’s name). Rally goers were beyond frustrated that Senator Collins has indicated she will support the bill despite the overwhelming vote by Mainers against its content in November.
As at previous rallies, there wascontinuing widespread anger at the open contempt of the Trump administration for constitutional rights that have been an essential thread in the fabric of American democracy since the Declaration of Independence.
