Old news
When it comes to aging in America, Maine is again an extreme.
Census estimates released June 13 show that Maine again has the oldest median population in the United States for another year.
Census data shows the median age of a Mainer was 43.5 years old in 2012, which is an increase since 2010's figure of 43.2 years and more than a year older than the next state on the list.
That follows a larger national trend. The U.S. population moved from a median age of 37.2 to 37.4 since 2010.
Northern New England is the oldest region of the U.S. with Maine the oldest, Vermont the second oldest with a median age of 42.3 and New Hampshire the third-oldest at a median age of 42.
The list of oldest states is top-heavy with New England States. In addition to holding the top three spots, Connecticut ranked sixth with a median age of 40.5, Rhode Island was ninth with a median age of 39.8 and Massachusetts was 11th with a median age of 39.3.
At the other end of the list was Utah, where the median age of the Beehive State was 29.9 years. Washington, D.C. was the second-youngest with a median age of 33.7 and Alaska was third-youngest, with a median age of 33.7 (Source: U.S. Census Bureau).
