Open house
The Wiscasset Municipal Airport is hosting an open house Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 11-12, featuring the Texas Flying Legends Museum.
This is the second annual event showcasing the Legends and airport by providing an opportunity to allow the public an up close look at a modern operating airport and historic World War II aircraft. The open house will feature aircraft displays of both modern and vintage aircraft, live music, food vendors, a P-51 ride raffle, other events and is used to raise funds for a variety of charities, including the Wounded Warriors Foundation and the Wiscasset Chamber of Commerce College Fund.
The Texas Flying Legends Museum features rare World War II vintage aircraft including one of only two Japanese Zeros still flying in the world (Last Samurai), a FG-1D Corsair (Whistling Death), a P-40K (Aleutian Tiger), a P-51D Mustang (Dakota Kid II) and a Mitchell B-25 Bomber (Betty’s Dream). The planes and pilots will be available to the public from 9 a.m. to approximately 4 p.m. both days. There is no admission charge.
Based out of Ellington Field in Houston, Texas, Texas Flying Legends Museum flies their growing collection from Texas to Minot, North Dakota each spring, to Wiscasset, Maine each summer, and back to Texas in the fall. The organization acquires the best flying WWII aircraft available today and campaign these Flying Legends with a sense of inspiration for those who are not aware or involved in the great history of the United States, and most importantly, honor the many that are. For additional information about the Legends and their schedule, visit their website at www.flyingfreedom.us.
During the open house the public will be able to see the planes up close, visit with the pilots, and enjoy food and entertainment throughout the day. The public will also be able to see the planes launched for an Airshow over the Boothbay Harbor Shipyard Cup and the recovery of the aircraft immediately following the Airshow. The aircraft are scheduled to start engines at 10:45 a.m. for an 11 a.m. departure for Boothbay Harbor, returning about 45 minutes later. They will repeat the routine again later in the day as the Shipyard Cup nears the finish line.
The Bath Municipal Band will be playing on Sunday, Aug. 12, during the Open House from 10 to 11:30 a.m. The band features medleys of Patriotic/WWII songs.
