Public meetings set for cost change plan
Sheepscot Valley Regional School Unit 12 has scheduled two public meetings to present changes in the local cost allocation process adopted by the Board of Directors.
The first meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, Oct. 23 in the Wiscasset High School library. The second is scheduled for Thursday, Oct. 25 in the cafeteria at Windsor School. The meetings will start at 6:30 p.m. and are expected to run for about an hour.
The board hosted meetings in late summer to take comments about the proposed changes before considering final adoption. Changing the local cost allocation of adult education from the historical percentage method to a percentage distribution based on the latest decennial census was the result of the summertime public hearing process and public comments.
Changes in local cost allocation would happen because Section 13-B of the RSU’s Reorganization Plan would be altered to allow cost distribution based on Cost per Subsidizable Student, yet recognizing the amounts of state subsidy allocated to towns and the tax dollars each is required to raise by statute. All towns would be responsible for the same cost per student rather than the wide difference now in place.
Materials concerning the new process are posted on the RSU’s website, www.SVRSU.org, and are town specific. Voters in all RSU 12 towns will be asked to consider changing the Section 13-B text on Tuesday, Nov. 6. If approved, the new allocation method would take effect with the school year beginning July 1, 2013.
