Racin’ Cancer Walk at Speedway Aug. 30
Wiscasset Speedway will once again be the home for the Racin’ Cancer Walk supporting the Dean Snell Cancer Foundation. The walk is just one of many fundraising efforts at the track for cancer patients of the New England Cancer Specialists of Topsham receiving money through the foundation. This amazing foundation helps the patients with the day to day financial burdens of living with cancer.
Wiscasset Speedway started this partnership in 2019 under the guidance of founder Penny Shorette. Shorette wanted to do something in memory of family friend and racer Shawn Gilley who had died from a rare form of cancer. Richard and Vanessa Jordan, owners of Wiscasset Speedway, allowed the Racin’ Cancer Walk to be held the Saturday of their big Boss Hogg weekend. The walk has walkers get donations for their walking around the speedway with all the proceeds going to the Racin’ Cancer Fundraiser total. Just a casual stroll at the pace they want, the walk has gained momentum in years past as the total number of walkers keeps growing. If you are interested in joining this year’s walk, it will be held on Aug. 30 from 9 a.m. to noon. Pledge forms can be printed from the wiscassetspeedway.com website page under the Fan Zone Tab or at the track during race nights. Walkers that raise more than $100 in donations get a free 2025 Racin’ Cancer T-shirt.
The fundraiser has turned into more than just the walk. We raffled off an Enduro car that some could race at one of the three Enduros held at the Speedway. This year’s lucky winner was Modified driver Reed Reno. Big thank you to Jeff Davis and family for again donating the car. We also have the 2025 Racin’ Cancer T-shirt available. We have an amazing list of sponsors that helped make this t-shirt possible. Just $20 can show your support. We also have silent auction raffles at the front gate. Grandstand season pass, Lobsters and fudge, Bingo’s BBQ, Chinet plates and gift cards, Pet basket, Ladies basket, Kids baskets, Men’s basket, and a home rug is just a quick list. These items will be drawn at the start of the Boss Hogg 150 on Sunday, Aug. 31.
With the help of the amazing fans, drivers, teams and businesses, the Racin' Cancer fundraiser was able to raise $21,882 last year. This brought the six-year total to $71,896. It sure does feel good when we hear of people who have gotten help from this great foundation. We are in hopes to raise even more this year. Come join us. If you have any questions about the Racin’ Cancer Walk or fundraiser, please reach out to Penny Shorette atponys7788@gmail.com. Thank you everyone for the support.
