Rebecca Brewer becomes town clerk
Rebecca Brewer believes her new job as Wiscasset’s town clerk will suit her perfectly, because she likes to be busy and clerk fits that bill.
"I'm busy all day long ... And it's a lot to learn, but I love doing that," she added in a phone interview Jan. 21. In his written report to selectmen for the board's Jan. 20 meeting, Town Manager Dennis Simmons announced Brewer's appointment.
This is Brewer’s first town clerk job but not her first one in municipal government.
The Wiscasset woman had been Edgecomb’s tax collector for just over five years when she became Wiscasset’s tax collector about five months ago; she became interim town clerk in December.
Town Clerk Linda Perry took a job as Union’s town clerk and resigned the Wiscasset job, Simmons said. Wiscasset honored Perry last August for 10 years of service.
Brewer told Wiscasset Newspaper, a tax collector is only especially busy couple times a year, but a clerk's work involves elections and more, year round.
Asked if she has any message for fellow residents, Brewer said: "Please have some patience with me. I'm learning. I'm doing the best I can. But definitely come in and see us, and we'll try to help with anything that anyone needs."
Off duty, Brewer likes taking Sunday drives with boyfriend Brendan Barry. "I think we've hit almost every town in the state now. We end up by Canada a lot."
Really? "Yeah, we do. Go for a Sunday drive, and it's 10 hours," she said, laughing. "It's awesome."
In other staffing news, Simmons' report said Officer Jonathan Barnes of Wiscasset Police Department has been appointed acting sergeant while Sgt. Perry Hatch is on medical leave; Karen Moody has taken the town tax collector job; and Katie Hemenway, accounts payable/deputy clerk/deputy tax collector. Simmons added, Emergency Medical Services Chief Erin Bean has successfully completed the National Academy of Ambulance Compliance program for the certified ambulance documentation specialist (CADS) designation. Simmons called CADS "the gold standard" in EMS documentation training.
"Please congratulate Erin on this accomplishment and her continued devotion to the EMS profession."
Selectmen nodded business licenses for Overbuilt Construction & Property Management, 38 Mountain Road, and New Horizon Foods, LLC, 146 Gardiner Road.
"Congratulations to (these) two new businesses in town," Vice Chair Pamela Dunning said.
