Senior center budget approved
The Senior Center budget was approved in last week’s town voting. That is good. What is bad is that only 14 percent of the eligible voters turned out to exercise their constitutional rights and their freedom to vote. That means that 86 percent couldn’t care less about their rights and freedoms.
I’m sure many of you have experienced the horrors of war or at least have had immediate family members who have served during the present and past conflicts.
So many young men and women have given so much, yet 86 percent of the voters chose not to exercise the rights preserved by those brave soldiers. Terrible.
At last Wednesday’s dinner, a membership meeting took place to vote on several Wiscasset Senior Center Bylaw changes. The most significant change was to the process of nomination of candidates for Trustees.
With this change, any nominations from the floor would be accepted in the week before the Trustee election. This would facilitate the printing of ballots. All bylaw changes were approved.
Since there were only three candidates running for the three open Trustee positions no further voting was done at the meeting. The new Trustees are Arlene Polewarczyk, Rudi Rines and Cyndy Lewis/Gail Burke who will serve on a shared Trustee spot.
Coming up in just about one week will be the Annual Breakfast on Saturday, June 29 starting at 8:30 a.m. There will be a Silent Auction. Bidding will start at the dinner on Wednesday, June 26, continue at lunch on Thursday, June 27 and conclude at the Annual Breakfast on Saturday, June 29.
We are hoping for a big turnout for the breakfast. Remember that it is free to all current members. There will be a short business meeting and the announcement of the Volunteer of the Year.
Hopefully there will be opportunities for everyone to express their hopes and desires for the future of the Senior Center. This is the end of the fiscal year and the start of the next year. The new Board of Trustees will take over and elect one of their own to be chairman for the coming year. It is the time to renew memberships and offer to serve on committees. It is the time to renew the spirit of the Senior Center.
Here’s a bit of interesting information from The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. “Financial exploitation results in older Americans losing an estimated 2.9 billion dollars annually. It is estimated that for each case that is reported, 43 others go unrecognized.
“It’s your money. You can say no. Scammers target polite people because they have a harder time saying no.”
Their website has more info: www.consumerfinance.gov/older-americans. There are many people and organizations wanting to take all you have. Even though they may seem very nice and helpful it doesn’t mean they are not crooks. Be careful.
The cribbage tournament winners on Tuesday, June 11 were Flo Dunham first, Ed Dunham second, Marge Pooler third and Dot Kidney and Gail Thayer tied for low score. The cribbage tournament winners on Thursday, June 13 were Ann Merry and Marge Pooler tied for first, Dot Kidney low score and Della Hilton had the high hand.
