Senior Center forms publicity committee
I was saddened to hear of the passing of Walter Sherman. He was a great supporter of the Senior Center, worked hard on the Finance Committee and enjoyed seeing everyone at the dinners.
When my wife and I moved to Wiscasset, Walter was the first to knock on our door and welcome us to Wiscasset. No matter how short or long our time is on the stage of life, we all have a chance to put on a unique song and dance routine. Walter did a fine routine and I was fortunate to have seen a part of that routine.
In the second week of her time as chef at the Senior Center, Julie Bellefleur prepared another scrumptious dinner on Wednesday and lunch on Thursday. The dinner included Italian wedding soup, stuffed shells and biscotti for dessert. The meal was like a trip to Italy. The soup was delicious and I even went back for a little bit more. There was just enough heat in it to make it taste good but not too hot to turn off anyone not liking hot foods.
The stuffed shells were served with meatballs that were firm but not hard and extra sauce was available to put over everything. The biscotti, which are the traditional Italian twice baked biscuits were made with chocolate chips this time and Julie made some that were crisp and some that were soft. They were a great way to finish off a great meal.
For the lunch on Thursday, Julie made up some Italian sandwiches. Very good and very satisfying. She had some Italian wedding soup left and that made the meal even better. It doesn’t get much better than this.
At the trustees meeting, the trustees authorized the establishment of a publicity committee. I was appointed chairman and members are Ellie Tracy, Larry Clark and Arlene Polewarczyk. Our main goal is to increase the awareness of the Senior Center and its offerings amongst the population of the greater Wiscasset area.
We started by doing a quick survey of the dinner and lunch attendees last week regarding their access to a computer and their use of a computer to see the newsletter. We hope to offer instruction on the use of a computer and how to get to our website. We hope to expand to the use of our own website instead of using the Community Center’s website. We hope to also make use of social media like Facebook in the future.
I was dismayed when I found out that several people said they did not know about the last election in Wiscasset. Info had been in local newspapers, on the town sign, on the town website and on local access cable TV. That makes it difficult to say anything about the Senior Center which has even less exposure to media. What is the best way to reach people 50 years old and older regarding the Senior Center? Where do you get news about the Senior Center and other community happenings? We’d like to hear from you.
