Senior center hosts town manager
Our new chef, Julie Bellefleur, prepared two delicious meals last week. On Wednesday we had more attendees than expected with around 50 people coming to the public supper. Julie prepared a cold, creamy cucumber soup to start the meal. She said that the basic ingredients were cucumbers of course and Greek yogurt. She then used various seasonings to make it a tasty treat. I thought that the Greek yogurt gave it a unique taste. The main course was BBQ chicken and corn on the cob. The chicken was done just right with many saying that it was nicely flavored and juicy making it a great meal. The corn was fresh and tender. Julie said that Yellowfront had just gotten it in and saved a box just for her and the Senior Center.
Seeing it was the first dinner of the month, that meant that it was birthday cake for dessert. Julie made a moist and delicious chocolate cake with white icing. The cake was served with Lear’s special “Black Fly” ice cream. The black flies were actually chocolate, making them the best black flies I’ve ever tasted. Lear’s Ice Cream is of course a local brand and it is always good to feature local businesses.
Laurie Smith, Wiscasset Town Manager, was a special guest at the Wednesday dinner. After dinner Laurie and Julie had an opportunity to have a quick discussion on business opportunities in Wiscasset including Julie’s home occupation of Bellefleur Bakery & Catering. It was evident that here were two of Wiscasset’s busiest women.
During the announcement time Senior Center member Ed Polewarczky put on his town selectman chair’s hat and talked about what was currently happening in town. He thanked all who turned out for the budget hearing on failed items in the last town vote. Ed also stated that he is building an email list of those interested in hearing from him regarding upcoming town events. If you are interested in getting an email when some events are about to occur in town, speak to Ed and get on his list. If you are not a Wiscasset resident I urge you to get involved with the activities in your town. In any case I urge everyone to understand the issues and vote in all elections.
On Thursday, Julie prepared a lunch of “make-your-own-sandwich.” She had all the fixings, including ham, turkey, egg salad, chicken salad, tomatoes, lettuce, various cheeses and her own freshly made bread. There were also some “store-bought” rolls and I had a sandwich on a roll but had to go back and have a second on Julie’s bread. That was the best.
While we had a great turnout for Wednesday dinner there were few who showed up on Thursday. That surprised several of us who had expected a large turnout. Please remember to make a dinner reservation ahead of time and if you are not a “regular” lunch goer please call in with a reservation for that meal too. We can handle a few “walk-ins” but we need to watch out for wasting food. Also if you find you can’t make it even though you have a reservation, please call in and cancel it.
