Skidompha has help for new Ancestry.com users
Skidompha Public Library is offering several opportunities in the coming weeks for those interested in family history research. Perhaps you’ve been given a subscription to Ancestry.com or you’ve treated yourself to one…now what?
Staff genealogist, Kathleen Maclachlan is accepting appointments for Thursday, Dec. 29 and Thursday, Jan. 5 to work with individuals who are new or beginner-level users of ancestry.com. Email kmmac06@outlook.com to choose a day and time. These lessons will be held in the second floor Genealogy and Local History Section of the library and are on a first-come, first-served basis, with a maximum of two people per time slot. Make an appointment soon for a beginner lesson to get the best from your ancestry.com subscription.
Meanwhile, January’s Genealogy Club topic is “What to Do When ‘Facts’ Don’t Match.” This talk will include hands-on practice of resolving those nagging discrepancies which researchers are often faced with. The presentation will be given on Thursday, Jan. 12, 12:30-2 p.m. in the Genealogy and Local History section, with a snow date one week later at the same time.
February’s Genealogy Club topic is “You’ve Received Your DNA Results – Now What?” The number of people having DNA tests done has skyrocketed, but when the results arrive many are unsure about how to use the information in their family history research. This presentation will focus on practical steps that can be taken to reveal new family history facts and will not be an in-depth scientific discourse on DNA methodology. This talk will be held in the Genealogy and Local History Section on Thursday, Feb. 9, 12:30-2 p.m. with a snow date one week later.
Skidompha Library’s Genealogy Club is free and is not limited to library members. The second floor Genealogy and Local History Section is accessible by elevator and is open for independent research whenever the library is open, Monday through Saturday. The section is staffed by Maclachlan on Thursdays from 9 a.m. -5 p.m.
