St. Philip’s teams with Bath church to aid camp
When Grace Episcopal Church in Bath invited St. Philip’s Episcopal Church in Wiscasset to raise funds together for the Episcopal Diocese of Maine’s Camp Bishopswood, Kristen Cowing thought it was a great idea.
The Dresden woman, who serves as clerk of the vestry at St. Philip’s, said several children from the Wiscasset church have attended the camp on Megunticook Lake in Hope; and the two churches have helped at each other’s events before, such as when Grace, the closest Episcopal church south of St. Philip’s, helped St. Philip’s at its chowder suppers, Cowing said.
Members of the two churches have met for suppers together that were not fundraisers, as well as helping with the events that are. “We like the opportunity to get together to do something that’s fun and worthwhile,” she said.
When Cowing learned that Camp Bishopswood was in need of work, she made a small personal donation. “But I felt that by doing the supper with Grace that I could make a bigger difference.”
A flier for the Saturday, Nov. 7 event states that the camp is in dire need of $135,000 in capital improvements.
Glenis Elliott, a member of Grace’s vestry, came up with the idea to work with St. Philip’s on a fundraiser. Elliott’s daughter attended the camp, as did she, about a half-century ago, Elliott said.
Elliott said she was delighted when St. Philip’s agreed to jointly sponsor the supper. “I think it’s so wonderful for us to be doing this together, for what we both feel is one of the most important things the Diocese does.”
The baked bean and casserole supper, being called the Bountiful Bean Benefit, is set for 5:30 p.m. Nov. 7 at Grace Episcopal Church, 1100 Washington Street in Bath, The cost is $8 for adults and $4 for children 12 and younger.
