Teach kids local agriculture
I am watching with great interest the development of the FARMS Community Kitchen on the top floor of Rising Tide in Damariscotta.
Heather Burt, daughter of Steve and Andy, invites us all to help in planning appropriate programs and events with a Focus on Agriculture in Rural Maine Schools.
How to use local garden and farm crops, neat ways to get kids to eat their vegetables, holiday fare of all seasons and more. They've had a successful fund-raising but can always use more. Visit www.mefarms.org for more details, or e-mail heather@mefarms.org.
This Saturday, June 15, is the Edgecomb Congregational Church Summer Supper #2, running from 5 to 6:30 p.m., providing a wonderful traditional New England meal of home made baked beans, casseroles, salads and desserts.
The thrift shop is open at 4 p.m. before every supper. There is seating under the tent for those who prefer outside dining. Adults $7, children under 12, $3. "Good Food, Good Fellowship, for a Good Cause."
For anyone who wishes to help out with preparation or clean-up, call Gail Boudin, 207-882-7972, or the Church office, 207-882-4060.
"Teens to Trails," a Maine organization dedicated to helping Maine teenagers rediscover outdoor recreation as an alternative to substance abuse and depression will be the recipient of the dedicated proceeds from this supper.
What went wrong with Edgecomb's Memorial Day flags? I remember during my stint as a selectman, we each took responsibility for one or two cemeteries, and replaced the veterans' flags usually a week to 2 or 3 days before the holiday.
It seems little enough to show gratitude for a town's sons and fathers who have made the supreme sacrifice in our defense. I agree with Fire Chief Potter; let's form a town committee to see that veterans' grave flags get renewed every year.
Rejoice! The Davey Bridge is back again, no more slaloming around orange witches' hats and feeling your bottom teeth hit your palate over the bumps!
A grand huzzah for all those graduating, wherever from, be it sixth grade, eighth grade, high school, college or graduate school. One of the wonders of summer, all those weird black hats tossed up in the air.
A major bravo for Jack Sarmanian, who has been in Oklahoma as a Red Cross disaster relief volunteer during a procession of tornadoes that have devastated that state.
June 14 is Flag Day, friends. Never a dull moment. Gathering blue flag and purple rocket at 234 River Road, 207-633-2978, and jocam@tidewater.net.
