Westport and Wiscasset withdrawal committee appointments complete
The Westport Island and Wiscasset withdrawal committee appointments are now complete.
The selectmen in each town appointed three members they were responsible for: a selectman, a member of the public and a signer of the petition to withdraw. The fourth member is a member of the district school board who represents the town.
The final steps in forming the withdrawal committees is for school board Chairwoman Hilary Holm to call a meeting of the withdrawal committee. She is responsible to open and preside over their first meeting until the committee elects a chair. Once the chairman is elected, Holm will turn the meeting over to him or her.
The meeting to elect the chairman for the town of Westport Island’s withdrawal committee will be Tuesday, July 17, at 6 p.m. at Wiscasset High School.
The meeting to elect Wiscasset’s withdrawal committee chairman will be held Thursday, July 19, at 6 p.m. at Wiscasset High School.
Apparently there was a misconception as to who is supposed to make the appointment from the school board. It was previously believed that it was the school board's responsibility to make the appointment. However, according to board Chairwoman Holm, the commissioner of education instructed the members representing Wiscasset and Westport Island to make the selection as who would serve on the withdrawal committee among themselves.
The Wiscasset representatives appointed Mary Myers to serve as the school board representative on her town's Withdrawal Committee, with Selectman Jefferson Slack, petition-signer Timothy Merry and Jason Downing from the general public.
Westport Island school board member Richard DeVries was selected to serve on that town’s withdrawal committee, with Selectman Gerald Bodmer, petition-signer Mort Mendes and Dennis Dunbar as a member of the public.
