Westport Island elections June 28
Who’s on first? Looks like town elections and town meeting will switch back to their original dates, since there won’t be a June vote for us on the RSU withdrawal.
Town elections will be Friday, June 28 from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., with our Town Meeting the next day, Saturday, June 29 at 9 a.m. With this extra two weeks, the Town Clerk has extended the deadline for nomination papers to May 14, so if you want to run for any of the open positions, there’s still time to gather 25 signatures.
This weather has made up for the coolness of March and early April. Saturday was a fantastic day for everything. Ann, Pat, Dick, Bill and Christy (members and friends of the Conservation Commission) handed out trash bags, orange vests, coffee and donuts.
About 24 town residents headed out that bright morning to pick up paper, plastic, cardboard, bottles, cans, a few tires, more plastic, more paper, and some “unknowns” from the roadside. We enjoyed the fresh air and a little exercise.
The Conservation Commission gives a special shout-out to Danny Hopkins for his great help. When we were done, most of us tossed our bags into the trucks, enjoyed cake, coffee, and water, and headed home. Not Danny; he stayed out on out on his stretch of road, determined to thoroughly clean up a messy ditch (and asking his mom to grab another trash bag from Town Hall). Inspiring and very much appreciated.
A lot of people from town are pretty active in the Garden Club of Wiscasset, which means for the rest of us, they are pretty good at growing annuals, perennials and herbs. The Club is holding its Annual Plant Sale this coming weekend, Saturday, May 11, from 8 a.m. until noon at the Wiscasset Municipal Building, Route 1 in Wiscasset.
The plants are all donated from members’ gardens; I was lucky to pick up a few plants last year and they’re still thriving in my small patch. There will also be a bake sale and some garden implements will be for sale. All proceeds go to the Garden Club’s scholarship and beautification programs. Stop in, add to your colorful plantings, and talk shop with folks who play in the same kind of soil, clay, and bedrock you do.
The Westport Community Association’s (WCA) is hoping Westport students will apply for the Academic Stipends. The deadline is June 15, a little over a month away.
The requirements are simple: you must be a resident of town; enrolled at a college, junior or community college, graduate school, trade school, or training program; and successfully completed at least one semester of study and be in good academic standing. The stipends are about $200.
The one-page applications are in the town office. Please complete this and return to Emily Adler, 16 Lord Road. Any questions, just give Emily a call at 207-882-9804.
The WCA raises funds for these stipends through the raffle at the Meet and Greet coming up on May 18. There are several nice donations already lined up. Prospective winners need not be present, since the raffle tickets will have names and phone numbers. If you can’t make the Meet and Greet, but still would like to participate, call or email Carol Blake (207-882-4267 or cjblake6@gmail.com). She’ll arrange to display the items at the Town Office, so that raffle tickets can be purchased in advance.
Squire Tarbox Farm is harvesting lots of green: salad, spicy, kale, chard, head lettuce and arugula. You can find them and Judy Hughes’s micro greens at the Bath and Boothbay Farmers Markets. The Farm’s CSA Pick up will be Fridays, not Wednesdays, until early to mid-June. This starts this Friday, May 10, from 3 to 6 p.m.
My bee balm looks a little thin, so I’m grateful for the few cheery, Johnny jumps-up. Let’s keep in touch: mewbarnes2@yahoo.com or 207-882-6055.
