What should the Woolwich Town Office look like?
The Building Committee wants input from Woolwich residents on two possible addition plans for the town office. Architect David Matero gave a brief presentation on the plans he drafted in cooperation with committee members during the October 15 Board of Selectmen's meeting in Woolwich.
Committee members determined more space is needed for administrative staff and room for the Emergency Medical Service, Chairman Dana Lindsey said. They have developed new plans that were based on the original proposal, but “significantly modified.” The unanimous decision to include in each proposal an added space for the EMS will also give back needed space for the town's fire department, Lindsey said.
Matero said both proposed plans still require additional research. Each is similar in design to the original plan, but has many of the updated features within a smaller footprint. In addition to an EMS wing, the building would be up to code and be accessible to all, Matero said. The plans include new office space, a meeting room and an elevator.
Additional parking in one of the plans could provide enough room for 32 cars. Matero acknowledged this would require cutting some trees and groundwork. He also said it would make sense to look at installing a new septic system in conjunction with this project.
One of the two diagrams shows a room that could double as a large meeting room and selectmen's meeting space. The design would comfortably accommodate 150 people, Matero said. Building code would allow such a room to hold as many as 250 people, but he said it would be tight.
“It's still early in the process,” Matero said. “But this is where we have gotten so far.”
The Building Committee will have the schematics and other information about the project at the town office on November 6 when residents will come in to vote. Committee members said to be sure to also check the town website, www.woolwich.us, as well as www.davidmatero.com for more information.
