Wiscasset bridge accident June 30 creates delays
Traffic on Route 1, lined with summer travelers, was backed up for miles in both directions after a three-car crash on the bridge in Wiscasset Sunday afternoon that sent at least three people to the hospital.
The accident is under investigation by the Wiscasset Police Department; the cause of the acci-dent is unknown, as well as who was injured or the conditions of those injured in the accident.
According to Police Chief Troy Cline, it appeared that at least three people were taken to a local hospital with no apparent serious injuries. The three cars involved were a Chevrolet sports utility vehicle driven by Richard Schuman of Wiscasset; the second vehicle a Subaru driven by Misty Brown of Edgecomb; and the third vehicle a Dodge van driven by Wendell Lewis of Boothbay.
There were no passengers in the Schuman vehicle, there were three passengers in the Brown vehicle, Alec, Daniel and Jordan Murphy; in the Lewis van there was on passenger, Shelia Lewis.
According to Cline, the accident occurred at 2:40 p.m. and the scene was cleared at 3:20 p.m. Police Officer Perry Hatch, the investigating officer, has five days to complete his report.
This accident in Wiscasset was one of many over the past weekend, according to Lincoln County Communications Interim Director Todd Hartung.
On June 29 there were three accidents reported, one each in Newcastle, Southport and Damariscotta. On Saturday, June 30, were three accidents in Boothbay Harbor, two of the accidents involving deer, one in Wiscasset, and an ATV accident in Somerville. On Sunday, July 1, in addition to the accident on the bridge, there was an accident in Whitefield.
Hartung also said the county received several fireworks complaints over the weekend from around the county.
