Wiscasset Committee divides and conquers
The Wiscasset's RSU Withdrawal Committee met briefly Thursday night to prepare for an upcoming meeting with consultants, where they will begin drafting a withdrawal agreement. Mary Meyers, Tim Merry and Jeff Slack discussed the material each of the committee members had agreed to gather.
Each member was charged with gathering information pertaining to the 11 elements in the withdrawal process. According to state statute, the withdrawal process requires a plan that addresses certain criteria, such as unaccounted for school construction projects, transportation, financial obligations, property and assets and administration.
According to Meyers, some of the concerns the agreement will address include what Wiscasset is responsible for paying and how the town would help educate special education students. The consultants asked committee members to provide an inventory of Wiscasset schools' assets before the RSU was formed, a list Slack said they already have.
Wiscasset Withdrawal Committee members said they plan to bring all of this information to their meeting with the consultants and the RSU ad-hoc Withdrawal Committee on September 27 to begin drafting their agreement. The meeting will take place at the Wiscasset Fire Station, starting at 6 p.m.
Sub-committee plan abandoned
Plans for a sub-committee to help Withdrawal Committee members during the process has fallen by the wayside. The sub-committee was intended to investigate the economic factors and consequences of Wiscasset's withdrawal from the RSU. Members envisioned it would be part of a long-range planning process. Meyers and Slack both said they felt there was not enough support for the sub-committee.
