Wiscasset musicians perform
Wiscasset Middle School presented their annual spring concert May 30. Keeping with tradition, the evening began with the combined choruses singing “The Star Spangled Banner.”
Following that the Fifth Grade Chorus sang three pieces. First, “It’s All About Music,” then “Um Skitta Rat Trapsi si Do,” featuring the traditional tunes of “The Can-Can,” “Stars and Stripes Forever,” and “The William Tell Overture.”
Then students enjoyed showing the audience some of their favorite dance moves during the medley of “Lean on Me” and “Don’t Stop Believin.’”
The Fifth Grade Beginning Band performed “Frere Jacques” in canon followed by the ever-popular hit, “We Will Rock You.”
The Middle School Chorus sang four pieces demonstrating various levels of difficulty. Their numbers included, “A Joyful Song” by Mary Lynn Lightfoot; “Memory” from the Broadway musical, “Cats”;an African piece “Amavolovolo” (featuring Matt Chapman, Samantha Myers, Danny Santaella and Cameron Snyder on African percussion); and the popular tune “Smile” which featured soloist, Kayla Bott.
The Middle School Band then entertained the audience with “Imperial March” from the movie, “The Empire Strikes Back.” Next, Samantha Myers performed a solo on her clarinet that she wrote entitled, “Freedom Runs In the Meadow.” Mr. Whitney accompanied her on the piano. The band concluded their portion of the concert by playing a powerful piece called, “Alpha Squadron” by Greg Hillis.
The finale of the concert was a combination of the Fifth Grade Chorus and Middle School Chorus performing an entertaining version of “Light Up the World,” made popular on the television series Glee.
