Senior Center membership meeting June 29
At the public supper last Wednesday evening, a flier describing the annual membership meeting was distributed. If you attend the suppers or the lunch, you will receive the flier at meal time. After a couple of weeks members who have not picked one up will have one mailed to them. Reduce expenses by picking up yours at the Senior Center.
The Membership Meeting will be held on Saturday, June 29. Breakfast will be served at 8:30 a.m. with the business meeting following. The breakfast is free to all current members. There will be a silent auction during and a lot of desirable items will be up for bid. All members are asked to make a reservation by June 16 by calling the front desk at 207-882-8230. (Please wait until June 1 to make the reservation.)
Also last Wednesday, a volunteer from the Mid Coast Hospital was present before dinner to give free blood pressure checks. She also said that May is Stroke Awareness Month and provided some useful information and material about strokes. Here is an easy way to tell if a person is having a stroke. Think of the word FAST: Face: Ask the person to smile. Does one side of the face droop? Arms: Ask the person to raise both arms. Does one arm drift downward? Speech: Ask the person to repeat a simple phrase. Is their speech slurred or strange? Time: If you observe any of these signs, call 9-1-1 immediately. For more information go to www.stroke.org/.
Recently the subject of scams and theft has come up. Do you remember the old movies when you could tell the bad guys by just the color of the hat they wore? Times have changed and that goes for scams, too. There are still the emails with bad English but the scammers and thieves are getting more sophisticated. If you have any “treasure” like money, prescription drugs, a good name/reputation, there are people out there figuring out ways to take it. Yes it is important to guard your “treasure” but perhaps the generalization that best fits is to spend and use your treasures wisely. Don’t give out information over the phone or the Internet unless you initiated the contact. The final thought is, yes there are a lot of guys with black hats out there but there are many others wearing white hats.
Unfortunately I was unable to obtain any information on the cribbage tournament winners on Tuesday, May 7. I was not able to attend that day but I did hear that a number of players from the Richmond Golden Oldies did play and I’m sure all had a good time. The cribbage tournament winners on Thursday, May 9 were Robbie Greenleaf first, Ann Merry second, Doc Schilke third, June Caton low score and Della Hilton had the high hand.
