Request to appoint Road Committee
Westport Island resident E. Davies Allan requested the selectmen appoint a Road Committee at their meeting July 30.
The selectmen took to action on the request but told Allan they would take it under consideration. Allan said the purpose of the Road Committee would be for accountability and long-range planning. Allan made it very clear his request had nothing to do with the integrity of the town’s road commissioner. “Because (Garry Cromwell) does a good job.” Allan said.
Allan also suggested members that could be willing to serve on the Road Committee and assist Cromwell. He suggested Jim Cromwell, Mark Cummings and himself to make engineering suggestions.
First Selectman George Richardson said the town had previously appointed an ad-hoc Road Committee, who also had made recommendations that were not accepted by the taxpayers.owevwer,H H
“However, we will consider your request,” he said.
The selectmen had held a ramp and float site review at the Wright Landing for the jetty before the selectmen’s meeting, which Allan had attended. Richardson said he wanted to take the opportunity to thank Allan for his offer to donate 155 feet of four-by-fours for a streamer down the center of the jetty. Apparently some of the blanks that were laid on the jetty are raising and could cause someone to trip on the jetty if not corrected.
The town is applying for a Small Harbor Improvement Grant of $81,600 to had a ramp and float to the jetty.
911 addressing
It has been reported to the town office there are several summer residences on the island without a 911 address. The selectmen will request the 911 addressing officer to provide addressing for those residents.
Also the selectmen will instruct the code enforcement officer not to issue any building permits for structures until the location has been given a 911 address.
Westport Island selectmen will hold their next meeting, Monday, Aug. 13, at 7 p.m.
