State recognizes Bruce Stedman
Sadness on the south end, rippling through town and beyond, with the passing of Charlie Howe. Deep roots, devotion to community, a quirky sense of humor, much more to recall and cherish. Our most heartfelt condolences to Sally and her family.
Last Thursday, the State House in Augusta was the scene for a special recognition for the late Bruce Stedman. Susie, surrounded by friends, was thrilled to hear Sen. Chris Johnson present the Maine Senate’s “Sentiment” honoring Bruce’s many years of service. Here is a small part of Sen. Johnson’s personal remarks: “I rise today to recognize the spirited life of Richard Bruce Stedman, and his many years of military and public service to his nation, his work helping the people of other nations, friends, and his community. The Bruce I knew was an understated man of quiet confidence, not easily ruffled, with a great warmth and sense of wit. I am proud to have known Bruce …. Mr. President, I respectfully ask that the sentiment be read, and further ask that when we adjourn today, we do so in memory and lasting tribute to Richard Bruce Stedman.”
The Town Hall received a thorough, four-star cleaning recently, when the Town Hall Committee and the Community Association teamed up to scrub the kitchen, bathrooms, refrigerator, and all the windows and floors. Wow, things will shine now! Thanks to Christie Hopkins for extra help. “Spick and span” in time for Town Meeting, and a busy summer of events.
The Fire Department’s yard sale is on for Saturday, August 10 at the Old Ames Store parking lot. They’re collecting all kinds of donated items. Please give Bob Mooney a call to arrange for pick-up (207-460-0367). It’s just the thing to inspire cleaning, sorting and “finding” more space by recycling kitchen items, still-working electronics and small appliances, books, furniture, you name it. Also, please don’t drop off anything at the firehouse.
Lots of boats heading up and down the roads these days, and trailers, too. In the words of our very efficient and friendly tax collector, “Be sure to register your boat before you float!” There are also lots of trailers in town, utility trailers, for ATVs, snowmobiles, boats, campers, etc., which still need to be registered, so please visit Dedee at the Town Office.
The town is looking for residents who’d like to represent Westport Island on the Mid-Coast Economic Development District. Let the selectmen know by stopping by the Town Office, or call 207-882-8477.
No more yellow buses for awhile. The summer finally starts this week for most of our young students. Hooray for your accomplishments.
