What's old?
Good news. We have signed a new chef for the 2013/2014 fiscal year. Her name is Julie Bellefleur. More about her and the July menu soon. Remember that there are no meals during the Fourth of July week.
Last Wednesday we enjoyed a delicious baked chicken dinner. Before dinner, the Crafty Friends had a huge display of crafts that they have completed or are working on. There was a great variety ranging from quilts to needlework to hooked rugs.
If you enjoy working on a particular craft, consider joining this group for good company while you work on your craft. You may join anytime and you do not need to attend all sessions.
After dinner there was a friendly game of Bingo. Unfortunately I was not able to stay but I heard that many did stay and had a good time. There will be more of this in the future.
During the last week or two, I have received notes regarding people hitting that magical age of 50. Also I heard that Phil and Lynn Gesner celebrated their 66th wedding anniversary. Best wishes to all.
Now what is old? When my father celebrated his 50th birthday, I thought that was really old. Now someone turning 50 sounds so young. Does being married for over 60 years make you old? Does hitting the half century mark make you old? Well, age is all relative. The celebration is more about life and living than years.
When you get to be 50 you can join the AARP. But even more importantly, you can join the Wiscasset Senior Center. Over the years we have debated what age do you become a “Senior” or “Senior Citizen” or “Elder” or “Golden Ager” or that nastiest of nasty words “Old.” At the Senior Center we picked the age of 50 as the date people could join but it is not about age but more about reaching a point in life and about living in general.
By the time you have lived 50 years, you have learned that good and bad happens in each life. Each person does good and interesting things along with “dumb” things. We have learned that in each day there is at least one little thing that is joyful and all our remaining tomorrows hold the promise of new adventures and challenges.
The role of the Senior Center is to enhance the good times and lessen the bad. It is a place to share some conversation over a meal. A chance to play a game and relax. A chance to get away from the trials and tribulations of the day. A place to learn, volunteer and find something worthwhile to do.
This Saturday, June 29 is the Wiscasset Senior Center Annual Membership Meeting. The meeting starts with a free breakfast for all current members at 8:30 a.m. This will be followed by a short business meeting. The Silent Auction that started on Wednesday, June 26 will conclude. If you are a member, I hope you have signed up to attend. If you are not a member, 2013/2014 memberships are available. Membership is for one year and runs from July 1 through June 30.
Once again I was not at the cribbage tournament on Tuesday but I was able to get the scores from Tuesday’s score sheet. The cribbage tournament winners on Tuesday, June 18 were Marlene Rines first, Joan Grondin second, Gail Thayer third and Ron Bodge low score.
The cribbage tournament winners on Thursday, June 20 were Tiger Chubbuck first, Phoebe Cromwell second, Robbie Greenleaf low score and Earl Dighton had the high hand.
Meals for next week. Reservations, please! Call 207-882-8230 at least two days in advance for meal reservations.)
