Maine history, wildlife talks coming up
Lea Wait's talk on Wiscasset history for the Lincoln County Historical Association will be Sunday, Feb. 16, 1 p.m. at the Wiscasset 9-1-1 Building on the courthouse grounds. "Uncertain Glory," Lea's next in her series of Wiscasset-based historical juveniles, will be released in April. It is set in the years of the Civil War.
Go to the Sheepscot Valley Conservation Association website to get the details for Annie Kassler's presentation about Maine's bats, white-nose syndrome and more. It will take place at Sheepscot Valley Conservation Assciation, Wednesday, Feb. 19, 6:30 p.m. This is the fourth in SVCA's 2014 series on Citizen Scientists, and how to become one. And then, at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 22, there will be a follow-up workshop on bat box building.
Entrepreneur Tony Casella has renamed the multi-named Dodge's Inn "Water's Edge." He intends it mainly as an event and banquet center, with limited restaurant service. Wedding and anniversary receptions will have a major claim on the facility, but events like fundraisers and awards banquets will also be possible.
Parade of Plaudits: the Edgecomb Eddy School spelling bee winner is Meghan Clifford, while Jonathan Genrich was the runner-up. Both students are in the fifth grade. We haven't yet heard how Edgecomb Eddy's Geography team has done, but the news will be out next week.
The Center for Teaching and Learning team of eighth graders placed first in the Alpha Chapter Mathcounts competition held January 25 at Kennebec Valley Community College. One of the four official team members was Parker Elkins of Edgecomb. However, eighth grader Amelia Genus competed on one of two unofficial teams, and came in fourth. Well done!
Friday is Valentine's Day, and, weather permitting, another visit from grandchildren and their ma, who will all leave on Monday, Presidents Day.
