Denniston's trial moves to Connecticut
The Boothbay Harbor resident who was arrested September 19 by the FBI reserved his right to a detention hearing and will return to Connecticut at a later date.
Garrett “Denny” Denniston was arraigned Monday, Sept. 24 at the United States District Court in Portland, Maine, where he waived his identification and probable cause hearings, but reserved the right to a bail hearing.
Denniston, 62, was arrested September 19 at his home in Boothbay Harbor. The former Sandy Hook, Conn. native was in on a criminal complaint alleging he had defrauded five long-time friends from Connecticut of more than $900,000.
During the hearing, Denniston waived his right to an identity hearing and a probable cause hearing. However he did reserve his right to a detention, or bail hearing, meaning he will return to Connecticut where charges were filed against him.
The identification hearing was to establish that Denniston was the person named in the charging documents, and the probable cause hearing was to acknowledge that the government had enough information and evidence, or probable cause, to charge Denniston, according to Judge John Rich.
Denniston, who arrived to the courthouse wearing a faded orange jumpsuit, and wrist and ankle cuffs, was held in Maine as the arresting district.
According to the affidavit supplied by the FBI, Denniston allegedly promised substantial financial returns and guaranteed that investments would not be lost, according to email transcripts included in the FBI’s affidavit.
The alleged victims had known Denniston for more than 25 years. The investments supposedly lost ranged from $207,000 to $400,000. Denniston was charged with wire fraud, which carries a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison.
The FBI alleges that Denniston misappropriated funds to purchase airfare, hotels, restaurants, country club memberships, mortgage and rent payments, remodeling expenses and other personal expenses.
